The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry: A Novel
by Rachel Joyce
Harold Fry is a must read... (7/10/2012)
I loved this book. It is not my usual style of reading, but it was immeasurably rewarding to follow Harold Fry across England. I had to often stop and hug my family as I came across yet another poignant moment. This book wakes you up and shines a light on how little moments add up to a chasm of words left unsaid. Sometimes stepping out of my usual genre takes me to unexpected places, and this book is not to be missed.
The Look of Love: A Piper Donovan Mystery
by Mary Jane Clark
A quick sitcom (11/2/2011)
This book was pleasant. It didn't grab my attention, but it held my interest. It was a light mystery that I don't regret reading; however, if I had paid full price for the book, I would have been furious. The chapters were distractingly short, the character's were not very deep and the plot not difficult to guess. I rate books on well I am transported to a new world, and this one left me still sitting in my living room.
Low Town: A Novel
by Daniel Polansky
Left me with too many questions (6/20/2011)
The mystery was solid, the atmosphere was very detailed and vibrant. However, I kept waiting for the author to explain the details and the back story. How did the protagonist end up a drug dealer? The story is alluded to, but never explained. I left the story feeling unfulfilled and wondering if I had missed the explanations or if I was just supposed to accept Lowtown as presented. I wanted to like the former cop turned drug dealer, but I seemed to crave some explanation as to why he ended up running LowTown? All in all, it was interesting but I can't say I would strongly recommend this book.
Outlander
by Diana Gabaldon
Struggled to finish. (3/10/2011)
I was surprised to find myself not enjoying this book. I had great expectations for this book, however, the only reason I actually finished the book was because I needed to write a review. I was unable to connect with the female character or the main male character. I found it impossible to suspend my disbelief in this time travel book, and at many points I had to put the book down in disgust. The writing was well done, but the behavior of the characters just didn't resonate with me.
