This was a well written book. It held my attention about the real life of a flight attendant. All too often we think of that life as being so wonderful. Hood brought the realities of that to light in her memoir. I enjoyed reading about her various experiences—whether it was sharing an apartment with other flight attendants or sleeping on the floor of an airplane.

I found this a fascinating read. I was especially impressed that a white woman, who was a minority in that country, learned the language and then married a native. Learning the language, in itself was an accomplishment.Her writing,illustrations, and recipes made it very interesting. The ability to provide details about her life, both the good and bad in Taiwan and mainland China was were fascinating. I appreciated the fact that she included both sides and did not sugarcoat things.
Definitely worth reading.

Footnote is the fascinating story of black theatre between 1885-1925. It details the stories of Noble Sissle, Eubie Blake, Flournoy Miller and Audrey Lyles and the trials and tribulations they encountered. These 4 were the writers of the music and lyrics for the musical," Shuffle Along". It was the first black written musical produced on Broadway.
I learned much about the lives and struggled of black performers in the '20s. I had no knowledge about the history of "Shuffle Along".
I feel this would be a good book for book clubs and especially those who are dealing with social justice issues.
Hieroglyphics

It was difficult for me to get into Hieroglyphics. I put the book down several times before I finished reading it. It's the story of a retired couple that moved from the North East to North Carolina to be closer to their daughter. They appear to feel that a part of their respective lives are missing. Frank, the husband, wants to search for his childhood home for memories.He finds it with a single woman living there. Lil, the wife, spends her days keeping notes on her daughter and thinking about old times.
I would recommend this book for book club. I feel that it would provide lively discussions. Topics covered could include loss, love, reminiscing.

This novel, based on a true story, was one that kept my attention throughout the book. A Czech prisoner farm girl who falls in love with a British soldier. With faith, love, bravery, and courage they escape and marry. Her escape was a dangerous one where at any point they could have been captured.As I was reading, I kept wondering what happened to the people that the novel was based on.

I have long had an interest in Spiritualism and Mediums. This book gave me a perfect opportunity to learn about them as well as Camp Etna. Having never heard of Camp Etna I was immediately drawn in to understanding communicating with the dead. Ptacin's linkage of feminism and Spiritualism and the role of women made me sit down and think about the parallels.
The chapter about the Healing Light Spiritualist Church was extremely interesting. The prayer was especially meaningful to me. If I lived closer, I would take a class and attend the church service. I feel that I could gain a lot. I am happy that BookBrowse provided me with this opportunity to gain knowledge.

I found this book very interesting and felt fortunate to have been able to read it. I liked the way that the author combined her personal story about all she went through to adopt her son, and the with historical events that had gone on.
I especially appreciated her comments and thoughts about the stereotypes about adoption in the black community.
The Shadow King: A Novel

As one who does not like any type of war, it took me a while to get into the book. Then it took me some time to get my thoughts written for this review. It was not easy reading for me.
War is always, in my opinion, horrific. But Mengiste writes beautifully in a language that allows you to to follow the events of the Ethiopian's fight against the Italians. Here you have women who want to do more than care for the sick and bury the dead. You find struggles against classism, gender as women become leaders. I found it interesting watching the women be inspired by other women to fight against the Italians. The author writes with honesty about war and what happen to women.
I spent a good deal of time search the internet about the historical events and their meaning in the novel.
Travelers: A Novel

Each of us is a traveler in one form or another. While this novel dealt with Africans leaving the continent of Africa to go to Europe or the United States as immigrants, it tells of their joys and pain. I felt that this book was especially relevant because of our current political environment regarding immigration. For me, it was an interesting and thought provoking novel.

In some instances, I felt some of the incidents could be tied to things happening today.

I was very happy to receive the ARC of the book. First, let me say that despite dander allergies I am a cat lover. I could so much relate to the interaction between the human and Nana.I was not sure that I was going to like the format but did. I felt that the story shows the love
between human beings and felines. How animals can be your soul mates and help you thru trying times so much so that you do not want to let them go. And when you must, you want to make certain it is a good environment. This is also the story of loving and forgiving. Definitely recommend book for feline lovers as well as animal lovers.

A Place for Us is a debut novel by Fatima Mirza and published by Sarah Jessica Parker's imprint. The book was different from what I had expected. It was well written. This is the story about an American-Muslim families dealing with what it means to be an individual and still a part of the family. Do you have your own hopes and dreams that might go against what was expected and still feel comfortable? Or do you go along with what others desire?I feel fortunate to have received an ARC of the novel. I enjoyed reading it and at times it brought about different emotions-joy, sorrow, pain and love. This would be a good book club read.

I enjoyed Dawn Davies book Mothers of Sparta.This series of essays about her life had me laughing and crying at various times.She presented her life, not in rose colored glasses, but with realism. Whether you are a mom or not, you will appreciate her honesty. I sympathized with her as I read her essay Pie. This is a good book for a book club discussion.
