A Million Things
by Emily Spurr
A Million Things (4/28/2021)
Overall, the book is beautifully writing and keeps the reader invested throughout. Our main character Rae is a 10-year-old child who lives with a mother who suffers from severe depression. One day Rae's mother leaves and never returns home. What is a child to do? Call for help? Not our main character Rae, she gets up, dust herself off, and continues to live her life like nothing has happened. The author does a fantastic job of making the reader feel like they are right there with Rae as she deals with the loss and pain of losing her mother and the steps she must take to survive.

The friendship between Rae and her elderly neighbor Lettie is amazing. How two people can connect and form a friendship that helps them both through some troubling times is beautifully describe in this book. This book rips your heart out and then shows you that even if we face tragedy there is still hope of something good to come.
Afterlife
by Julia Alvarez
Afterlife (2/13/2020)
In the book Afterlife, our main character Antonia Vega is trying to deal with the sudden loss of her husband, Sam, when life throws her a several curve balls, retirement, an older sister with mental health issues goes missing, sibling drama, and an undocumented teen at her doorstep.

Antonia admits that she is not the best person to deal with these problems and out of the two of them; Sam was the one to jump in and help others in need. Throughout the book we see how Antonia uses her memories of Sam and what he would have done in those situations to help others. I loved Sam's mother saying "Let's see what love can do".

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and will recommend it to my book club.
Golden Child
by Claire Adam
Golden Child (10/23/2018)
The book "Golden Child" follows the lives of Clyde, Joy, and their twin sons in rural Trinidad. Peter is the bright twin and considered the "golden child" of the family while his twin brother Paul is considered "slow". Clyde and Joy love them both but know, out of the two, Peter has a better future. One day Paul goes for a walk and never comes back.
What will Clyde and Joy do? Will they risk it all to save Paul or will they do nothing and protect their golden child? Many parents would do anything to save their children. But what if you don't have the means to save them both?
This book was well written and describes the problems that many families face when living in poverty. I can't wait to discuss this book in my book club.
Far From True: A Promise Falls Novel
by Linwood Barclay
Town of Secrets (1/26/2016)
Far from true is a well written thriller filled with characters from Lindwood Barclay's first novel Broken Promises.

The novel begins with an explosion at an outdoor movie theater killing several people. Private Eye Cal Weaver is hired to investigate a break in at a home of one of the victims and finds a secret room where a lot of adult activities have occurred and were recorded. Movies are missing and many people's secrets may be exposed.

As Cal continues his investigation, Detective Barry Duckworth continues to solve the crimes of Promise Falls. From attempted rapes, murdered women and fire
bombed bookstores, his hands are full. But what keeps you up at night is will he ever figure out what the number "23" means and if it's the same person who is doing all of these crimes.

Overall, this book kept me entertained and I can't wait for the next installment.
Broken Promise: A Thriller
by Linwood Barclay
Broken Promise (7/6/2015)
Dave Harwood has lost his wife and is trying to put his life back together. So he decides to move back to his parents' house in Promise Falls, NY with his son Ethan.

At his mother's request he goes sees his cousin Marla, who has lost a baby a year ago and is still suffering from the lost. When David arrives at his cousin's home he finds Marla holding a baby…a "gift from an Angel." How did Marla get this "gift"? Did she kill someone for this child?

If you think David is having a hard time dealing with this problem you haven't met Promise Falls local police detective Barry Duckworth. Detective Duckworth is having a hard time trying to keep up with all the crimes that are happening in his town. What can go wrong in a town called Promise Falls? Apparently a lot, from the attacks on three college age girls, to 23 dead squirrels in a park and even a murder woman. I think it's time to move away from Promise Falls.

Overall, this book was an excellent read. I loved how the author kept me guessing and made me want to know more. I can't wait until the next book.
Five
by Ursula Archer
Murder in numbers (10/10/2014)
Before reading this book I have never been exposed to geocaching and I have to say it was nice way to be introduced to this subject. Overall the book was straight forward and had some twist and turns. Ursula Archer main characters Det. Beatrice Kaspary and Det. Florin Wenningern are called onto a unique murder case where the killer leaves a cryptic message on his victim. This cryptic message discloses the location of his next victim. Will are noble detectives figure out the clue and save the next victim or become a pawn in killer's game?

Det. Beatrice Kaspary is a single mom who is going through a lot of personal issues at home and for some reason our killer has become obsessed with her. Throughout the book, Beatrice receives some creepy messages from the killer. Messages that no woman would like to receive.

Even though you figure out who the killer is midway through the book the story is so good that you can't put the book down.

Thank you again for allowing me the opportunity to read and review the book.
Precious Thing
by Colette McBeth
Precious Thing (1/15/2014)
Do you really know your best friend? That is the million dollar question in Precious Thing by Colette McBeth. Rachel, a non-social teenage girl, is befriended by the popular Clara in high school and life changes for her dramatically. Now, in the present day, Rachel is the successful one and Clara is not.

Rachel, a TV reporter, is called to cover a news story of a missing girl. Little did she know that that missing girl is her best friend Clara. Here is where the author captures you, drags you through so many twists and turns that she makes it impossible for you to put down the book. The whole time I was reading Precious Thing the same question kept coming up "How well did Rachel know Clara or even her own boyfriend?" Does anyone really know the people in their lives?

The ending leaves you so surprised that you feel like reading it all over again just to see if you missed a clue.

I loved this book and will be mentioning it to my book club group as a possible future book club read.

Thank you again for allowing me to read and review this fantastic book.
Songs of Willow Frost
by Jamie Ford
Songs of Willow Frost (7/8/2013)
Jamie Ford is a great storyteller. I love the way he is able to make you feel the emotions that his charters are going through and gets you so excited to see how they will end up at the end of his books.

In "Songs of Willow Frost" you see that his main charters William and Liu Song Eng (aka Willow Frost") never really control their own lives. Living during an era where Chinese Americans are seen a second class citizens. They are both required to do what others ask or demand from them. From Liu Song Eng dealings with her stepfather to how William is treated in the Orphanage. It is not until some major events happen to them that they decided to take charge of their lives.

Throughout the book, you wonder will William and Willow final find the love they truly deserve or will they be let down again. It is not until the end of the book that you find out the true answer to that question.

I loved this book and can't wait to have our book club read it in September.

Thank you for the opportunity to read such a great book.
Ghostman
by Roger Hobbs
Ghostman (1/16/2013)
"Ghostman" is a well written thriller featuring a professional imposter named Jack. Jack is skilled in changing his appearance and voice to match any disguise he is trying to pull off. This skill comes in handy when he needs to disappear after a job or to avoid being caught by the police or FBI. This novel begins with Jack being called in to clean up a botched casino robbery for his colleague Marcus. Little does Jack know that repaying a favor my cost him his life. Will Jack succeed in capturing a missing robber and find the missing money or get caught in the cross fire.

If you are a fan of Dan Brown or Michael Connelly you will like this one. Congratulations to Roger Hobbs in producing a thriller that has won this fan.
