The Right Sort of Man
by Allison Montclair
Unexpectedly Good (7/12/2021)
I really enjoyed this immediate post-WWII mystery. It could be deemed a cozy, I believe.

The main characters, Iris and Gwen, are well-rounded, distinct characters, who have opened The Right Sort matchmaking business, to help those seeking love find their life partner. One of their clients was recently murdered, and the man they had matched her with is the accused. These birds know better, though, and investigate to try to prove the man innocent and find the guilty party.
London itself feels a character. Each setting really comes to life. The author uses the dialect of different London neighborhoods to make scenes feel more authentic.

There were a couple of editing errors that really should've been caught before publication. These sorts of things, when noticed, do detract from the story, which is otherwise thoroughly enjoyable.

Definitely would recommend to those who love mysteries with strong female protagonists, historical fiction circa WWII, and those who love cozies I think would enjoy as well.
Patsy: A Novel
by Nicole Dennis-Benn
Well-Written Novel Touching Upon Various Topics (7/10/2021)
Well-written novel touching upon the topics of mother-daughter relationships, sexuality, classism, and racism, set in both Jamaica and NYC.

Patsy makes her way to New York City, following a long-lost love/friend. Only she gets there and discovers the American dream isn't so dreamy after all. In following her dream of coming to America, she basically abandons her young daughter, who is the other narrator. In this way, all the aforementioned issues are discussed and thus compared between the two countries.

The characters are three-dimensional. The settings come alive. There were some things I didn't consider necessary to be written to tell the story. It was occasionally difficult to read this book as a mother myself. Thus my 'I Like It' rating.

If you like reading books that explore the aforementioned topics, this is a good work of fiction to pick up and I recommend it to you.
