My Broken Language: A Memoir
by Quiara Alegría Hudes
An absorbing cultural blend! (1/7/2022)
This was an absorbing and often “eye opening” read.
The author was intelligent enough to take advantage of the educational opportunities provided for her, without losing her cultural identity.
I thoroughly enjoyed Quiara’s descriptions of the physical differences between the Puerto Rican women in her family and the current ideas of “American” female beauty.
Her relatives were able to appreciate their femininity in all of its shapes and forms. It was a shame that so many of them succumbed to the AIDS epidemic. The author is truly a “survivor”.
The Last Flight
by Julie Clark
A Compelling Thriller (5/28/2020)
The Last Flight is a well written story of two separate women trying to escape the consequences of the decisions they have made. Chapters alternate between the characters and I found myself sympathizing with and hopeful that each of the them would succeed in their “flights”.
Sold on a Monday
by Kristina McMorris
Disappointing (8/24/2018)
As I tend enjoy well developed literature and historical fiction, I eagerly anticipated reading "Sold on a Monday". I assumed the book would be a meaningful exploration of the economic and social conditions during the Great Depression that caused desperation in many families. The potential of the title was never fulfilled. Instead the author provided what seemed to be a screenplay outline, without any character development or believable storyline. It reminded me of a televised serial drama with numerous and ludicrous plot twists thrown in to hold one's interest for 60 minutes.
