The Gifts: A Novel
by Liz Hyder
A Beautiful Dream (3/8/2023)
The design of this book is stellar and I was very excited when I received it. The author's writing is very descriptive and engaging. I enjoyed all of the visual effect she imbedded into her writing. I really felt like I was watching the events of the book unfold. The five different narrators of the story gave key insights that enhanced the journey of the "fallen angels" and really add a nice tone to the book. This novel was very thought provoking and I can't wait to share it with patrons. I'm eager to do a second, slower read-through.
Fruiting Bodies: Stories
by Kathryn Harlan
Awesome Exploration of Queerness (6/30/2022)
This title was an awesome read that really touched on the queer experience. All the stories touched on how sexualitly affects human growth. Fruiting Bodies explores how our bodies react and how our brain processes life when you realize your attraction to others differs from how you were taught.
The Latinist: A Novel
by Mark Prins
An Exploration into Contemporary Godhood (10/5/2021)
In The Latinist Mark Prins uses wit and expert knowledge to retell the classic Greek myth of Daphne and Apollo. Prins does an excellent job of capturing the toxic nature of Apollo and his lovers, especially Daphne, through a lens of contemporary academia. The nature of Tessa and Chris's relationship, as well as their relationship with their supporting characters can be read as a retelling of Dahne and Apollo, but their story also can stand on its own as an original New Age narrative. Prins narrative flows well and is enjoyable to read. The amount of detail and allusion Prins include adds to the richness of the story without detracting from the enjoyment of the experience. This book managed to be witty, engaging, and relevant all at the same time. I highly recommend this book for readers seeking a fresh take interpersonal problems that have existed from ancient to contemporary times.
