In the Garden of Monsters: A Novel
by Crystal King
Mythology brought to life (8/4/2024)
I have really enjoyed Greek Mythology since I could read as a child. So I am familiar with most of the stories. I loved how the author pulled several of them together and into the present. King's research info at the end showed how thorough she is in her writing. I am also a big fan of Dali since my Junior High School days when I did more than one report on him. What a brilliant move to bring these characters together and so true to the historical documentation. I had to keep myself from reading In The Garden of Monsters too fast so that I wouldn't miss a single wonderful detail.
Everything We Never Knew: A Novel
by Julianne Hough
Really liked this book (7/13/2024)
I wasn't sure what to expect as I used to watch the author as a professional dancer on Dancing with the Stars. I realized just because she's a wonderful dancer doesn't mean she can't write a good book. I was happy to find out she can. From the cover it seems that there is a co-author which hadn't been mentioned but I would love to know how they divided up the process. Energy healing is not a topic I am familiar with but I enjoyed the thorough and entertaining way the topic was developed. I liked the character development and the descriptive phrasing. I actually barely put it down once I received it! Well done Julianne and Ellen
Romantic Comedy: A Novel
by Curtis Sittenfeld
Very well written (5/22/2024)
I really enjoyed this book. At first I wasn’t sure if I would be too old to enjoy it. I will be 74 tomorrow! But I think this book will be a fun read for a wide range of ages. I even liked the texting section though some of the acronyms flew right by me. Not even sure that’s what they are called nowadays.

The author did a wonderful job of portraying the main characters insecurities and relationships with a variety of people. At the end I was thinking to myself he had done an excellent job portraying his female characters. Turned to look at that back and found out Curtis is a girls name!

I should have known!
Devil Makes Three: A Novel
by Ben Fountain
I learned a lot (9/7/2023)
This book is long but well worth it. I feel I learned something on almost every page. When names or events were mentioned I often looked them up. All were accurate and factual. The characters were very well developed and stayed true to their given characters. There was so much detail and so much to think about. I did not realize how little I knew about Haiti but felt better that the historical and political events were familiar. Devil Makes Three is definitely worth the investment of your time.
The First Conspiracy: The Secret Plot to Kill George Washington
by Brad Meltzer & Josh Mensch
Not a history buff (5/25/2023)
I don’t usually read history books. About as close as I get is historical fiction. So this wasn’t an easy read but I learned a lot and impressed my husband! He loves history books and will be reading this one for sure.
Panther Gap: A Novel
by James A. McLaughlin
Wonderful! (3/28/2023)
I loved all the different aspects of this book. McLaughlin wrote expertly and convincingly about the science and the nature and the mysticism. And I devoured it all. I had to make myself slow down so that I would appreciate it more and remember it better. The family dynamics were well thought out and depicted and Colorado was actually another character in the book. The change in time and speaker and location were done in such a great way that they were a great way to give the reader important backstories and were easy to follow
I hope there is a sequel and as another reader mentioned a prequel to learn more about the Girard family. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review Panther Gap.
