similar, but still good
Let me start off by saying that all of the criticisms saying that Eragon bears similarity to Tolkien's work are entirely true. As a huge fan of the fantasy genre i have read The Lord of the Rings several times over, and it was such a groundbreaking work that almost any fantasy novel written from that point on is going to contain similarities. That said, I do believe that Paulini borrowed from Tolkien, intentionally or otherwise, but still managed to write an excellent fantasy novel that was original and fresh enough to keep me entertained until the last page and thirsty for a sequel.
I also liked the fact that Paulini is a young writer, and I believe that we will see him hone his skills as time goes on and he continues to pump out great novels. And as far as originality goes, he will start borrowing less from other authors once he begins to find his own style. Critics may say that Paulini borrowed certain elements from Tolkien, but soon they will be saying that other authors borrowed from Paulini.
Eragon is an excellent novel that i absolutely could not wrench my nose from, even if my house was ablaze. I wouldn't go so far as to say that it will be a classic in the years to come, but it is a sturdy fantasy novel and a must read for any fans of the genre, young and old alike.

Personally I liked the book. I really dont see why people are against it since it has parts similar to what J.R.R Tolkien and Anne McCaffery write. I mean come on, the Lord of the Rings is like the root of all fantasy, as are dragons. If your against this book then you might as well loathe all books with dragons, considering most will have "riders" its a good plot idea not just anyone person's.
At first the only reason I read this book was cause I was on a 24 hour round roadtrip down to the Valley. Even though at first the reason I was reading Eragon was to ignore the other occupants of the vehicle, I was quickly absorbed into the book, I couldn't put it down and I just had to know what was going to happen next. Right now, though, I'm regretting having read the book so fast since Sam wants her book back.
The wait 'til the next book is killing meeee.

I loved reading this book! when i read books i try not to compare it to others and label it a 'rip off' unless its Completely obvious. In this case it really isn't, it has an original story line. It really isn't anything like Harry Potter (i love those books) and it may be similar to lotr, but I mean what story doesn't have a bad guy? Things like that. Some things like elves and dwarves people like to keep traditional, it would be strange if some author made the dwarves 6 feet tall or elves that prance around in the open. But that's just what I think. Even as much as I like the book I don't think that Christopher will become more 'popular' than J.K. Rowling, maybe one day but that would be in a while, since she hasn't finished her series either.
I can't wait till Eldest comes out!

I think it was a good book. There were some similarits, but that is to be expectedd in the expanding world of fantasy. It moves fast and keeps you interested. I dont think it was really written for people over 20, that might need a slower, descriptive book. I personaly recomend Lamb, or any of Terry Prachet's books for the older folks;).

I must say, Eragon was a great book, it holds a steady plot and a wide world that is layed out in an easy but enchanting fashion.
One of the better books I've read in a while and I must marvel at the skill of the young author to write something like this, I wish him god speed with his career, even if it's so I have something to read after I drain the shelves.

ok i liked this book alot. shur there were plot and writing stile from lotr and other books but with all the books that have been published it is hard to not find simularities with books. i dont think people should be overly critical on somebodies ability to write a book of that size. I have tried writing a book and have found out how hard it is to not be influanced by other books that I have read. therefor i think that anybody that can write a book without influnces from other books should recieve an award.

A book worth reading over and over and over again! It's kind of a mixture of "Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter" .... but maybe better!

This book is great!!! It's like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings rolled into one. It has mystical creatures, evil vilans, and cool heros. With tons of twists and turns, and lots of action it's easy to want to read it in one night. I also liked how it got right into the story unlike some books you can't even bare to read 10 pages into. The one thing I didn't like was how it ended leaving so much untold. I know it takes a long time to write a book but now I have to wait nearly nine months just for the second one when it took me two days to read the first. All in all its a great book but in the time we wait for the second one we forget the first. In my opinion it gets a 4.
