This book was an unexpected treasure. Though I initially had disdain for Christopher, I began to understand him when I realized he was really just trying to sort out the same issues we all need answers to. Questions like, "Why am I here?", "What is my purpose?", "What has lasting value and meaning in life?"

This book haunted me long after I put it down. Though Chris acted out his issues externally, by taking risks, refuting materialism, rejecting society to a degree, I feel that he was brave and purehearted, and in his final days came closer to the truth that we are all looking for.

I can tell the author also felt this connection, and because of this, the book almost has an auto-biographical feel. I great read!!

I read this books when it was originally published and although I have ready many, many books, to this day I still vividly remember the story of this young man as if it was yesterday. I have read all 3 of Krakauer's books and find them incredibly interesting, especially since they are true stories and very informative. Like other reviwers I am not adventurous at all but I really enjoyed this book and became emotionally attached to this young man and highly recommend it.

I don't read much books.. but this book is amazing. McCandless is an unforgettable young man.

This was a very engrossing book, and I've read it twice already. You know Chris was wrong to do what he did, and probably unstable, but you still understand why he did it. Maybe there's a little of Chris in a lot of us-- the romantic adventurer. Or maybe we have someone like Chris in our own families. Whatever it is, I found this very moving. Knowing upfront that he died made it even more poignant and frustrating at the same time. Excellent book, not harrowing like Into Thin Air, but almost as personal. I'll keep reading Jon Krakauer's books.

This book is one of the best books that I have read. I have never really been intrested in mountain climbing and journeys like the one Chris took but I really enjoyed this book and could barely put it down. I am now much more intrested in reading other books about such adventures like "Into Thin Air". I suggest that everyone read this book once in their lifetime.

I found the book to be highly interesting and addictive. Although it was assigned to me, and I didn't read it by choice, I still enjoyed it. McCandless's struggle to find himself in sanctity in Mt. McKinley was not only tragic, but also memorable for readers of his letters and his family, as well. I look forward to reading the rest of Krakauer's books. He is truly a great American writer.

this book is just great. this'll probably sound like self-aggrandinzing-ness, but what chris did is sort of what i had hoped to do after i graduate from high school for a summer. this book gave me a great view on it, plus it is an incredible story and remarkable written.

I haven't read this book all the way through yet, but it has me hanging on by my socks. i am enjoying it very much.
