I gave this book a three and that may be genourous at best,I got disgusted with the book at about the 3rd or 4th chapter but went on until I finished so I could be honest in my review and I was hoping that it would get better. True,it was realistic in a lot of ways,my family is friends with a foster mother and we know some true life horror storys but this book was overwritten and poorly made in my estimate. First off.why do people feel a need to put down religion, especially christianity down in some way? And what was the point in Olivia Johnsone? No real character there just a wasted sheet of paper,Claire and Ray was good plot eleiments but Astid was just a girl rolling in self-pity,instead of making herself better in her circumstances,Janet Fitch did a injustice to all real foster girls and let them see the girl Astrid deciding that life was life and there was no point in bettering yourself! Boo! If you like this book it is your choice, not mine.

Hands down, one of the greatest novels i have ever read. The characters are enchanting, so vivid and full of life. The author, Janet Fitch is a poet...her sentances flow beautifully page after page. You will not be able to put this book down, it draws you into Astrid's world( the main character) until you feel like you are actually there with her...everyone MUST read this book!

I apologize this is not a review, I could take the time to search for a forum on it(if one exists) but I have other things to do, so I hope you don't mind. I would like some content info about the book. The movie was very unorthadox by today's standards, of editing (as in making them non existent) sexual images-- though they were some of the theme. I'm hoping the book is similar in this regaurd, if not, what is the extent of explicitness? Could someone please email me this info, and anyother you think i may be concerned about; at : maliktahamapemba@hotmail.com. Thank you very much.

I am still in awe of this young lady's command of metaphors and vivid descriptions. I am eager to read more of her writing...so young...so gifted!!!!!

This book, "White Oleander", was one of the best books that I have ever read. I simply could not put it down, and hated for it to end. Maybe, a sequel? I am awaiting Janet Finch to complete her next novel.
