Racial Book
I did not like this book at all. The get so racial for "The Mexicans" instead the author could have said the people from out of the country instead of saying Mexicans also I think that Ricky should have came out in the book like he returned home...

I read this book because I thought it would be interesting to see Grisham try his writing skills at a story about something other than mass litigation and lawyers. I think he should stick to the law. This book was a huge failure in my opinion. I forced myself to finish it because I was hoping for some sort of satisfaction at the end. The painted house itself had no meaning. Neither did the Mexicans or the kid's family. A TV movie was made out of it and I should have watched it, maybe then I would have found the tiniest reason to like the story.

i really liked the book, eventhought it does not tell where Rickey (Luke's uncle) was the father of the new baby!!

I have read some of John Grisham's other books, The Chamber, Time to Kill and Pelican Brief, also seen the associated films,
but I have to say 'A Painted House' is just his finest. As a Blues, Cajun and Country music fan I have always been fascinated by the people and landscapes of the deep South, the history and struggles that produced the music- its all there in John Grishams novels.
The greatest American writer since Steinbeck. Chris Taylor, UK

I would like to give A Painted House to my 11 year old son for Christmas. He is a highly advanced reader and very, very smart. I do not know if it contains graphic or adult content, can anyone advise?

I really liked this book. When I started it, i expected it to be another legal thriller, but it isn't. i enjoyed reading about life in rural arkansas in the early 50's through the eyes of a 7 year old. In a way, it had a Grapes of Wrath element. When i started this book, I thought I would never finish it. By the time I was at page 300, I could not put it down. I read the last 150 pages non-stop!! I highly recommend this book.
