I've grown up in Jonesboro, Arkansas and it is interesting to finally read a novel that concerns places around here. To me, reading this book was like listening to my grandparents tell of how they grew up on the farm. This is a great work by John Grisham and I recommend that everyone read it.

This was the best book I've ever read. My dad and aunt had read the book and recomended it to me and I absoutly loved it. It is a great historical foction novel. I'm 12 years old and it's the first actual novel I've ever read. It had no greatly adult content, not rated PG but not a crude novel. I really liked the suspence and the drama. I could relate a lot to the characters and felt like what was going on in the story, was actually happening to me. I couldn't put the book down once I picked it up. I really hope some one comes up with a follow up book. If you haven't read this book you are missing out on the best hostorical fiction novel ever written.

Quite possibly one of my most favorite books. This was an interesting one because it was not a Lawyer book. At first I thought this book was going to be sort of boring because it took place on a cotton farm. But man, he twists so many spicy twists in the book!!! I LOVED near the end when Cowboy ... well, I'll let you read it if you haven't. This book definetely deserves a "5" in my opinion! Great work, Mr. Grisham!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I could related to the book because I grew up in rural AL on a cotton farm. I could visualize riding to the cotton field in the trailer because we did the same thing.
Please write a sequal to this book. I must find out about the family that went up North and I want to know what happened to the sharecroppers.
This is a very moving story!

I loved this book. I've read it twice. I could relate to a lot of the content having grown up in rural Arkansas and hearing my parents tell of the cotton picking days. As expected John Grisham has given us another wonderful read that keeps you awake all hours of the night to finish just one more page. The movie was filmed about 10 miles from my home and I think it will be every bit as good as the book. Scott Glenn plays Pappy and Geoffery Lewis is Mr. Spruhill. The house built for the movie is exactly as described in the book. I can hardly wait to see it in April.

I am now reading this wonderful book for the third time. My husband has now picked it up and started reading it also. It takes you to a time that you wish you were a part of, but yet glad you never need to face those hardships. The cultural differences are right on. Yet, I still want to know more about the babies and the success or failure up north. Did Ricky make it home? Please, John, write a sequel and put our questions to rest. I would buy a copy the day it hit the stands.

A Painted House -
This surprisingly different novel from John Grisham is near perfect. Grisham captures perfectly the voice and view of his protagonist, a young boy. Grisham successfully enmeshes many other characters into the story whose personalities are real and whose presence adds layers of wonderful tension to the story.

I read this book to my two teenage sons who also loved it. The story, compassionate and sometimes tense, is told with much humor and tenderness. There is little to no profanity. I heartily recommend it. Men and boys will probably relate best to the story. I put it in the same league as "To Kill a Mockingbird"
