I listened to the audio version of this book. The narration, done in a tone of understated, almost deadpan sarcasm, is perfect for the story. It had me laughing out loud. Yeah, it isn't great literature, and the overblown American Christmas is an easy target for satire. But the story is well told, and Grisham's prose has all the crisp sparkle of his thrillers. He also manages to deliver an ending that is sweet, but not syrupy. If there's a lesson in the book, it may be that sometimes happiness lies in doing exactly what everyone expects... I'm hoping the movie lives up to its source material.

Wonderfully fun and entertaining book. I couldn't put it down. I anxiously looked to see when the movie would be out, as I pictured Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis fitting perfectly into the lead character's roles. I was seriously disappointed to read a review of the movie stating that Nora had become quite a feminist--not what the book portrayed, and that the annoying neighbor has been made to be a "Christian" right -wing nut. Why does Hollywood think all the red states need to have Hollywood/New York ethics forced on them to give them the enlightened message of how things should be? I think it will detract some from those of us normal people who identify with the lead characters in suburbia

A+++++ Well, I have to say that this is one of the funniest books I have ever read and if you are looking at this and deciding whether or not to read it, pleeeease do - I have reccomended to everyone I know. The whole idea of skipping christmas is tempting to many people and the way it is done in this very lighthearted novel is superb. The grumbling nature of the main character only adds to the humor and plenty of what he says is true (if you feel that xmas is overated in any way, shape or form you will agree). I am glad that a film of it has been made - I only wish that Kevin Spacey had the part of Luther as it was him that I saw whilst reading the book from page one. I hope it is as funny as the book and can't wait to see the rooftop scene! Go on, go read it now.

I REALLY LIKE THIS BOOK. IT IS A CHANGE FOR GRISHAM. THE BOOK IS JUST FUN TO READ. CHRISTMAS CAN GET SO CRAZY AND THIS BOOK CAN REALLY TAKE YOU AWAY FROM THE CRAZINESS FOR AWHILE. EVERYONE CAN RELATE TO THE INSANTIY THAT TAKES PLACE THROUGHOUT THE BOOK. THOSE OF YOU WITH THE DETAILED COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE BOOK NEED TO LIGHTEN' UP ONCE IN A WHILE. A BOOK DOESN'T ALWAYS HAVE TO HAVE BE DRAMATIC AND THE CHARACTERS ANAYLIZED. THIS BOOK IS JUST PLAIN FUN.

I loved this book. It has become a tradition to read it every Christmas. Christmas is a very special time in my family, and this book brings that lesson home. My husband and read it, and my 2 daughters, ages 15 and 13 have both read it. To anyone who says Grisham needs to stick to legal thrillers and thinks this book is beneath him.....you take life too seriously! Lighten up -- that's all Grisham is trying to do. I think it's nice to see Grisham "get out of his rut" and do something different. Can hardly wait to see the movie.
