I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I especially loved the characters. Both primary & secondary characters were well drawn out and I found I was sympathetic to all of them including characters called Chicken and Caspar. The Empress Sisi, Bay Middleton, his horse Tipsy and the Grand National Horse Race were all immediately googled. I just wanted to know more about them.

This book was really fun without being silly, The line between fact and fiction made for a fun and entertaining read.

I liked this book. After some prior heavy reading, it was nice to have a change of pace. I enjoy historical fiction and this book was accurate I believe with just the right blend of history and fiction. I liked Charlotte and the other characters, thought the introduction of early photography enhanced the novel, and liked the depiction of the milieu.
I found it especially interesting because my grandmother immigrated from the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1913 and when she was four years old, Franz Joseph passed through her village and she always remembered it as a parade she viewed on her father's shoulders. He was well liked by the people of that time. I would definitely recommend this book!

We read this for our book club. We like the book, it described the period. A good historical novel. A great summer read.

Having been in Budapest, I was intrigued by Empress Elizabeth. There is a bridge, several orphanages and a boulevard named for her. All our guide told us was that she loved the climate of Hungary and its people - no mention of Bay Middleton. The book explains her absences. There is good character development, historical accuracy and cutting edge character dialogue - a fictional history of a fascinating character and the people surrounding her.

What a wonderful book! I was completely engrossed from the first page and found the characters likable and engaging. I am always struck anew at how class ruled (and continues to rule) in other countries, with those of lesser prospects drawn into situations and relationships based on the inequality of position. Sometimes, the only way to extricate oneself from such a situation is to begin anew elsewhere. The ending of the book felt rushed, as though the author decided to quickly tie up all of the loose ends and be done already. Still, all in all, a good read.

If you love historical fiction based on fact you will enjoy this latest effort by Daisy Goodwin. Loosely based on and around the Empress Elizabeth of Austria better known as Sisi. Sisi, along with a handsome young officer and a naive sheltered young heiress provide an entertaining tale of the eternal triangle. There is delightful description of "the" hunt and life of the upper class in England during this period of time. Like many novels today a good editor could have tightened the prose and probably cut the length by 100 pages. That being said, and with summer being in full swing at the release time of this novel, I would say buy the book - it will provide a pleasant passage of time at the beach or the lake.

Don't know why I feel guilty about enjoying romantic novels, but I do. I really enjoyed this book so much that I went to look up the actual facts about the story. Each of the main characters was sympathetic and I found it hard to put the book down. I have not read this author previously and will not look for her books in the library.

The Fortune Hunter by Daisy Goodwin was a delightful, easy to read tale about a man entranced by two women. Mixing a bit of European history with romance, this story kept me interested to the end. Well written it should appeal to someone looking for a relaxing, non taxing read. It is a good break from reading heavier fiction and non fiction and quick to get through. I would not recommend it to book clubs as there is nothing to discuss. It is just a pleasant escape.
