About this book

Book Summary

From the creator of We Have No Idea, an introductory journey into your own mind—if your inner voice had a Ph.D. in brain science, cracked jokes, and drew cartoons.

Why do you love? Why do you lie? What makes you happy? Every single thought you have comes from one place: your brain. But what makes it tick? How much of it have we decoded, and how much of it remains an impenetrable mystery?

Join bestselling author and online cartoonist Jorge Cham and neuroscientist Dwayne Godwin on a deep dive into the fascinating world of the human brain, in which they will explore questions such as: What is consciousness? Where is you in the brain? And do we have free will? All while illuminating everything we know (and don't know) about one of the most complex objects in the known universe. Think of it as conversation-ammunition for your next cocktail party, or a quick fascinating read while you're in the bathroom (don't worry, the chapters aren't that long). Centered around questions we all ask ourselves at some point but don't usually have answers to, Out of Your Mind is an illustrated book about the brain that isn't too brainy. Playful, accessible, and deeply insightful, it's the one brain book that's truly accessible and suitable for all brains.

Media Reviews

"Cartoonist Cham teams up with neuroscientist Godwin for this fizzy investigation of how the brain works...Unfortunately, the discussions can feel rudimentary, with a chapter on free will revolving around the obvious point that such behavior as sneezing and crying appear to be innate and therefore unconscious. Diverting if insubstantial, this is heavy on 'pop' and light on 'science.'" —Publishers Weekly

"Out of Your Mind is a highly creative way to convey science, especially about that most mysterious of all human organs, the brain. This is no dry text book, nor a comic book. It is a fun-filled trip, with clear and easy to read explanations, humor and wit, entertaining illustrations, and good storytelling to boot." —Alan Lightman, author of The Transcendent Brain

"For anyone curious about the new frontiers of brain science, from why we love to how we remember, this playful and accessible approach is the perfect place to start." —Casey Schwartz, author of In the Mind Fields: Exploring the New Science of Neuropsychoanalysis

"Human brains are the single greatest natural resource we have on the planet, and Jorge and Dwayne are two of my favorites. Out of Your Mind is fascinating, moving, funny, and thoughtful (no pun intended)." —Ryan North, author of How to Invent Everything

"The most gentle and comprehensive introduction to the human mind—from cells to societies. Thanks to the lucid writing and charming art, after years of pretending, I now actually understand neurons and neural networks." —Zach Weinersmith, illustrator and co-author of Soonish and A City on Mars
