An Inspector Devlin Mystery, #3
by Brian McGilloway
When a controversial US diplomat is attacked during the opening of a Donegal gold mine, Garda Inspector Benedict Devlin is disciplined for the lapse in security. The gunman turns out to be a young environmentalist - related to an old friend of Devlin's. Within days, the killing of an illegal immigrant near the Irish border leads Devlin to a vicious people-smuggling ring. Then Bradley himself is found dead near the mine and Devlin begins to suspect that the business is a front for something far more sinister than mere mining. Bleed a River Deep is the new novel from one of the most acclaimed young crime-writers around, a labyrinthine tale of big business, the new Europe, and the dispossessed. World politics, industry and organized crime collide in McGilloway's most accomplished, most gripping, and most powerful novel yet.
"Starred Review. A rising star in the world of Irish crime fiction, McGilloway has created a doggedly persistent hero in Devlin." - Publishers Weekly
"Brian McGilloway blends international politics, big business, gold mining, archaeology and people-trafficking in his third, confident police procedural set in the borderlands between the North and the South of Ireland." - Eurocrime.co.uk
"Inspector Ben Devlin is becoming a favourite among serious fans of murder mysteries. He is a fine man, not just because he goes to early Mass on Sundays, marks the sign of the cross on the forehead of a dying policewoman, whispers an Act of Contrition into her ear, and presses her hands to his lips; but precisely because that is his way to show his concern for other people... In a brilliant narrative device, Brian McGilloway has Devlin suspended from duty... This means that Devlin is obliged, not only to conduct half of an investigation outside his own jurisdiction, but also to spearhead almost the whole operation, on both sides of the Border, while having no jurisdiction at all. It sure is a good trick if you can do it. Devlin can, and does." - Irish Times Book of the Day
"Inspector Ben Devlin is that rare creature: a detective who is not violent or tortured, but who is intensely, movingly human, and it is his humanity and decency that grip the reader and give these novels a searing honesty. The Devlin books are set to become one of the great series in modern crime fiction." - John Connolly, best selling author of The Reapers
