About this book

Book Summary

In the bestselling tradition of Rescuing Sprite comes the story of a puppy brought back from the brink of death, and the family he adopted.

In 2002, Larry Levin and his twin sons, Dan and Noah, took their terminally ill cat to the Ardmore Animal Hospital outside Philadelphia to have the beloved pet put to sleep. What would begin as a terrible day suddenly got brighter as the ugliest dog they had ever seen--one who was missing an ear and had half his face covered in scar tissue--ran up to them and captured their hearts. The dog had been used as bait for fighting dogs when he was just a few months old. He had been thrown in a cage and left to die until the police rescued him and the staff at Ardmore Animal Hospital saved his life. The Levins, whose sons are themselves adopted, were unable to resist Oogy's charms, and decided to take him home.

Heartwarming and redemptive, Oogy is the story of the people who were determined to rescue this dog against all odds, and of the family who took him home, named him "Oogy" (an affectionate derivative of ugly), and made him one of their own.

Media Reviews

"Attorney Levin shares the by turns horrifying and heartwarming story of Oogy, his gentle pit bull who went from brutalized bait for fighting dogs to beloved family member and therapy dog." - Publishers Weekly

'Levin affectingly weaves their story with Oogy's, delivering a sweet sense of the possibilities of giving - and getting - love ... highly recommended for anyone (that's all of us) in need of inspiration." - Library Journal

"Oogy's story confirms what Dewey taught me years ago...that even a wounded animal tossed aside is capable of amazing joy if given love and respect by the human chosen to share life with them." - Vicki Myron, author of Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World

GREAT READ ESPECIALLY FOR ANIMAL LOVERS
This book was AMAZING! I read it in 2 days, and could not put it down after I began. I am an animal lover, animal activist, and shelter volunteer, and when I read about this book in Oprah Magazine, I ordered it online immediately. Larry Levin is a great writer, and sounds like a compassionate soul. The amount of care he put in to raising this abused dog was admirable, and just reading his work made me want to know him. Any pet or any human that has come into contact with Larry Levin is lucky! This is a great read for an animal lover, a vegetarian, someone thinking about owning a pet. This book would be ESPECIALLY beneficial for a legislator, so that they could better understand the atrocity of animal abuse and our need for stronger laws to better protect the animals we share this world with. I'll be sending this book in the mail to a friend of mine across the country, because I think she will love it also.

Oogy
Being a Pit bull Rescuer myself, I was attracted to the book by it's cover, but once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. All the things Mr Levin said that Oogy did reminded me so much of my guys who lay at my feet while I read. Even though Oogy
was a Dogo and my guys are Pit Bulls, I guess all abused animals respond the same to LOVE.....
An excellent book...God bless you, the Levin family for giving Oogy a second chance at life, especially thinking from the start that he was a Pit Bull. You have my deepest respect.
