Big (BIG!) Secrets! A Compelling ChickLit Page-Turner with Major Plot Twists and Turns Ooooh! This is delicious ChickLit and a compelling page-turner with a multilayered plot line, well-developed characters, and (of course!) big secrets. Really, really big secrets from two husbands.
Written by Liane Moriarty, this is the story of three women living in Sydney, Australia, who barely know each other when the book begins but whose stories intertwine in surprising and heartbreaking ways:
• Cecilia Fitzpatrick is the happily married mother of three girls, Isabel, Esther, and Polly. Her husband, John-Paul, is successful and very (very!) good looking. Cecilia is the mastermind of organization, running her household and a lucrative Tupperware business. One day when John-Paul is on a business trip in New York City, she finds a sealed letter he wrote years ago addressed to her. On the front of the envelope it says: "To be opened only in the event of my death." Of course, she opens it even though John-Paul is alive and well. And life will never ever be the same again.
• Tess O'Leary is married to Will, and along with her cousin/best friend Felicity the three run a successful marketing/advertising company in Melbourne. Tess and Will have a six-year-old boy named Liam. Life is wonderful until one evening when Will and Felicity confront Tess with a shocking tale. She flees with Liam to her mother's home in Sydney.
• Rachel Crowley is a widowed grandmother, who dotes on her only grandchild, two-year-old Jacob. She and her husband had two children, but their daughter, Janie, was brutally murdered when she was 17, and Rachel has never recovered or stopped grieving. The case was never solved. Now her son and daughter-in-law are moving to New York, which will leave a giant hole in Rachel's heart when they take little Jacob with them. Rachel harbors a deep-seated anger that is nearly destroying her, especially because she thinks she knows who murdered her daughter.
The writing is light and breezy—just like ChickLit should be—until the major twists and turns in the plot give a real jolt and turn it into a kind of thriller. This is where it gets serious, and Liane Moriarty proves her writing chops as she tackles difficult topics, including marital infidelity, moral responsibilities, and troublesome ethical questions. Themes of betrayal, guilt, grief, and eventual forgiveness are laced throughout the novel.
This is a book that forces the reader to think, to put herself in the place of the characters and answer the almost unanswerable questions with which they are living.
Bonus: There are many spot-on pieces of life advice sprinkled throughout the novel.

as well as being intriguing and thought-provoking, it is also humorous The Husband’s Secret is the fifth adult novel by Australian author, Liane Moriarty. It is early evening on the Monday before Easter, 2012. In Sydney, widowed secretary of St Angela’s Catholic Primary School, Rachel Crowley, still grieving the daughter she lost nearly thirty years ago, is dismayed to learn that her son Rob, his wife Lauren and her dear little grandson, Jacob will be moving to New York.
Cecilia Fitzpatrick, Tupperware agent and busy school mum with three daughters at St Angela’s, accidentally comes across a letter, addressed to her, from her husband, John-Paul (currently in Chicago for work), in a sealed envelope, intriguingly labelled “to be opened only in the event of my death”. In Melbourne, happily married Tess O’Leary, mother of Liam, is stunned when her husband, Will and her cousin and best friend, Felicity tell her that they have fallen in love with each other.
Over the next six days, there will be unimaginable changes in each of their lives, lives that will intersect to culminate in a dramatic climax. As Cecilia tries to resist the temptation to open the letter (“She considered tearing it open right that second, before she had time to think about it, like the way she sometimes (not very often) shoved the last biscuit or chocolate in her mouth, before her conscience had time to catch up with her greed”), Moriarty tantalises the reader with several possibilities before the contents are eventually revealed.
Cecilia had lately been wishing for a bit of excitement in her ordinary life: the admonition: “be careful what you wish for…” was once again upheld. Moriarty once again gives the reader characters that are easy to identify with, leading their fairly ordinary lives in a setting that is reassuringly familiar. None, however, is quite what they first appear; each has their faults and imperfections, and everyone has a secret (or two): some are mundane, some are funny, some will leave the reader gasping.
Moriarty is not afraid to tackle a dark subject and puts her characters into situations that will have the reader pondering, long after the last page is turned, on how they themselves would react when faced with such a dilemma. Events and circumstances in her characters’ lives emphasise that, in life, nothing is black and white. Shame, pride, vanity, grief, fear, guilt and revenge all variously dictate the behaviour of the characters; tragedy, irony, coincidence and circumstance also play a part.
Moriarty gives the reader some marvellously descriptive prose: “She didn’t feel angry yet. Not really. But she could feel the possibility of a fury worse than anything she’d ever experienced, a simmering vat of anger that could explode like a fireball, destroying everything in its vicinity”, also “A steady stream of suggestions ran silently through her head like those snippets of news that run along the bottom of the TV on CNN” and “It was like fishing. It took silence and patience. (Or so she’d heard. Cecilia would rather hammer nails into her forehead than go fishing.)”.
Each book by Liane Moriarty seems to surpass the last and this one is no exception. This is a brilliant read: as well as being intriguing and thought-provoking, it is also humorous (often blackly so) and quite moving. Readers will look forward to Moriarty’s next title, Big Little Lies.

We All have Secrets! This is one of the best books I've read all year! I really didn't know what to expect, but the author pulled me into the story quickly and held my interest throughout. She did an excellent job of bringing together multiple threads of multiple life lines and weaving them together in a totally credible fashion. I was quite impressed with her insights on the darker side of our human natures and more than once recognized a character's snide thought or comment that I've had in my own head and never shared out loud. This would definitely be a good book club read as there is a lot of material to generate discussion.

Much More Than Australian Chick Lit Some readers have described this book as light Australian chick lit perfect for the beach. I read my fair share of chick lit beach reads but I would NOT place Liane Moriarty's The Husband's Secret in that category. This book is much more substantial than that description. Instead, expect to be challenged by this read. The first challenge is to keep straight the many (seemingly) unrelated characters that you will be introduced to in the first few chapters. The next challenge will unfold as the book progresses. The author let's you in to the thoughts and feelings of these characters as each faces and tackles some pretty daunting life obstacles. Your challenge is to refrain (if you can) on passing judgment too soon. Would you feel the same way given the same obstacle? Would you take the same action? This book is definitely a great beach read but don't expect to just sit on the sidelines, sipping a fruity drink. You will be mentally engaged in the story whether you like it or not. Expect this one to be made into a movie!
