She provided the mystery. That storyline provided the possibility of something more sinister being a part of what happened to Maya but as it turned out she just was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was just curious as to it all. She proved to be helpful and helped serve as a device to have some full disclosure and resolution

I kept thinking (hoping) that there would be a little more mystery to why she even appeared. In the end it just seemed...obvious. Like that character that appears in a movie for the purpose of clearing everything up for the characters so they don't have to work at it.

She actually drew the reader in at the beginning when Maya's death was such a mystery. In addition, she did provide some clarity and insight to the character of Maya.
I believe that she was just a diversionary device to throw the reader off the track. Her character sort of disappeared after a time, when initially she seemed to be hot on the trail of Adrian and his family.

Jane filled in the back story of Maya for the reader and Adrian, really. Because he was as disconnected from Maya as much as from anyone else. It also seemed as if Adrian could have also used Jane as the next stepping stone "of love" since he was attracted to her. She also is what kept the mystery in the story. I kept reading to find out who she was.

I think her introduction as somebody who had been watching Adrian and appeared to have known more than the reader knew in the beginning was a great opener to draw you in. As the story went on, it did seem like she would have a bigger role, or more of a main character in the story. But in the end she was another supporting character that really came along to help clarify a lot of the questions Adrian had come to have.
I think she also provided a subject that for the first time in years let Adrian's family have a common tie. Her introduction and the uncertainty of who she is really was the first time we saw them behave as a single unit. They were nervous she'd been watching Pearl, they helped their dad track her down, and Adrian was asking and talking with his family about her. They were a family that did not communicate well and had a lot of secrets. Jane/Abby was the first subject we saw them really talk openly about and all of them share what they had found or their theories or concerns and worries. I think it brought the family closer together and more of an open dialogue about Mia's death and the mystery about it. Before that, we get the impression that it had all just kind of been swept under the rug, hush-hush, and everybody drifted apart.

The mystery of Jane/Abby was significant...I thought for quite a while that she had some kind of role in Maya's death. Initially I thought she was obsessed with Adrian as she stalked him and his family. Her character definitely drove the book. Could she be the writer of the e-mails? Who was she, what did she want, what did she do? Those questions continued in my mind throughout the book.
