What memories did Cadie and Daniela's underground library stir in you? Which of your own favorite books would you have wanted to share with the Summer Kid?

As Cadie and Daniela created an underground library for Garrett, with references to classics like Kidnapped and The Call of the Wild, what memories did this stir for you? Which of your own favorite books would you have wanted to share with the Summer Kid?

At age 12 I would not have been reading and owning the books that Caddie passes along. I was reading Little Woman, Heidi, Black Beauty, The Ark and perhaps Beverly Clever books. I absolutely loved Nancy Drew books as well. I was alwats an avid reader.

I was into the horse books, Black Beauty. Misty of Chincoteague. I also loved the Nancy Drew books

Horse books for me too! I also loved The Outsiders at that age.

Agatha Christie

I would have absolutely fallen in love with a mysterious boy that enjoyed writing in my margins, that's for sure. This was a connection I had with literally no one my age, male or female. I was reading all sorts of things - anything I could get my hands on - but particularly remember reading "The Chosen" by Chaim Potok at age 10 and realizing I had no one to talk to about it. If a boy, mysterious as he was no less, was intrigued by the books I was reading and actively communicating to me through them, I would never forget it.

Although I'm not a huge fan of this book in general, I did love this aspect! I definitely thought back to myself at that age, when I had so much more time to read. I had memories of reading as a teenager, sharing books with friends and read sseveral of the books discussed in this book.

As a young teen I enjoyed Nancy Drew and some classics like Adventures of Tom Sawyer and would recommend what would be classics today plus books recommended bythe American Library Association's teen division for which a new list is published yearly.

My Friend Flicka was a seminal book for me because it was the in the "adult" library and my father insisted that the librarian issue me an adult card so I could check it out on my own. I was in the third grade. It opened a whole new world for me. That day I also checked out a book on Custer at the Little Big Horn and a book about Aztec Indians. I never forgot that day and would have loved sharing it with another person my age at that time.

I didn’t own many children’s books and had to go to the main library in a major city to take out “age-appropriate” books. What happened instead is that I read whatever was in our house, like the Encyclopedia Britannica, Reader’s Digest abridged books, and books like “Death Be Not Proud” and “Gone With the Wind”. Only as an adult did I read what many children read today, like “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” “Huckleberry Finn,” and Madeleine L’Engle.

I was reading Nancy Drew when I was their age. Not sure it would be something Garrett would have liked! Maybe the Hardy Boys as that is what my brother was reading.

Like many of the others who responded, I was an avid reader but didn't really get into those kinds of classics until I was a bit older. At that age, I was reading Nancy Drew, too!

I remembered the Bookmobile that used to come to my valley once every two weeks when I was 9 or 10.Books were in short supply in our mobile home but the library was magical. I discovered The Little House books and for the first time, I was reading about people like my homesteading ancestors.
I enjoyed hearing about the books Cadie supplied for Garrett their mysterious friend. I would have given him the Gary Paulson books, My Side of the Mountain, and Into Thin Air.

So I am about to show my age... To Kill a Mockingbird (made me an English major), Jane Eyre, The Outsiders, Dinky Hocker Shoots Smack, A Hero Ain't Nothin' but a Sandwich, Up the Down Staircase, ANY Judy Blume! I could go on and on. The Library - both the public one and at school - the smell of a book, the sound of the stamp on the check out card - yes!!

Jane Eyre changed my life when I was 13. It was the first time I recognized th power of books. The underground library reminds me of The Cemetery of Lost Books in The Shadow of the Wind.

My absolute favorite when I was in elementary school was The Wheel on the School. For some reason, that book really resonated with me. I read it countless times. Beyond that, I don't really remember other titles. LOL. When I got to middle school and beyond, I didn't care what I read as long as it was a thick book! ?? I love the idea of having a secret friend to pass messages with.

I read anything I could check out of our school library; literally, anything I could get my hands on. When we started reading novels in class, I complained like all my classmates, but secretly I was doing the happy dance! I loved them all.
I would have loved to have a friend to do a secret book share with.
