Sally learns from her mother that we all have public and private selves. How would you describe Sally's selves? How would you describe Noah's? When do you think they switch from using their public to private selves with each other?

RE: How would you describe Sally's ...

Everyone has a private and public "self". Noah had to control his public image at all times while in a publice situation. Sally could be a little more herself even in public. Noah could be honest when he and Sally were in private. He shot down her idea for the skit about how average looking men at TNO always ended up with the beautiful and seemingly accomplished women. He was brutally honest.

Being a pop culture icon is a double edged sword. A hyped up public image can easily overshadow the real person. In the real world, I can only think of a few stars who have managed their stardom without the hype. To those who aspire, be careful what you wish for.

RE: How would you describe Sally's ...

I have known a few celebrities and other public figures, and they have to be very careful about the way in which they present themselves in an attempt to avoid media scrutiny and scandal. Noah was very aware of his public persona and what his fans expected & wanted from him. He was very savvy about it and took appropriate precautions. However, when sharing private conversations with Sally, he was able to be himself and honest. As a writer with a more modest level of fame, Sally did not have to live within the same constraints vis a vis the public. Her constraints were internal, an aspect of the story I found quite fascinating and, as a woman, relatable.
