How would you characterize Sally's relationship with The Night Owls? Why do you think it's so hard for her to conceive of leaving?

I think that Sally felt encouraged early on by TNO. She sent a resume every single year until she was finally hired. TNO saw something in her that her own husband didn’t. She spent more time with her co-workers than anyone else because of the long and late work hours. Her core support came from TNO. I think it really gave Sally her identity. She was free to take risks here in ways she didn’t outside of work.
I also think that because Sally took such a huge risk to join the staff at TNO. she felt safe, secure, and accepted as she hadn’t while married. We know she had confidence issues outside of the work environment so that may have been playing on her mind as she struggled with her decision too.

She felt that she'd found her place and her people there, felt understood and accepted. She felt she'd found a place where she could contribute and shine, to an extent that she'd never experienced before. Leaving would be very hard under those circumstances.

Agree with the other reviewers that TNO has a hold on Sally given she left her marriage for the job. But also wonder how one leaves a job that consumes so much of your life. The time commitment and hours kept would make it hard to envision another life - almost a Stockholm Syndrome.

TNO is Sally's family. She wants approval just as a child would want from a parent or sibling. She has always been valued for her talent, but could this be in jeopardy? It is her identity as she doesn't have a life "outside the office" so to speak. Her insecurity with others leads her to spew forth unpleasant remarks often.

I very much related to Sally's dedication to TNO and her colleagues. She had been there for many years and earned the respect of her colleagues, even though her relationship with Elliot became complicated and uncomforable after she realized she had misread the signs and they would not be romantically involved. She truly loved her work, had even picked up a couple of Emmy awards, and was well compensated. Being a writer for TNO was a dream come true for her and something she pursued vigorously before finally landing the gig. To give up something that meaningful and fulfilling is not easy. (I had to think hard about retiring or remaining in a career I loved . . . retirement won out and I have never regretted it.)
