How might this novel have been different if Sally were a cast member on TNO, not just a writer?

Sally definitely would have been used to being the center attention! She would have been less focused on how she looked compared to Noah because she would have been considered “one of the beautiful people”. She would have had the same or similar experiences that Noah had-with adoring fans, the media, and most likely the tabloids!

My quick reply to this question was the novel wouldn’t have changed much. Second thought have me going in a different direction. As a writer, Sally is a star behind closed doors. As a cast member or a host, Sally would have been exposed to a different level of public opinion. Noah would have been an equal”star”. Writer Sally lived an unglamorous life on her office couch. At the end of the book, she was still adjusting to being in love with and married to Noah.

I don't think it would have made any difference. Sally was insecure about her appearance and would be that way whether she was a cast member, a writer, or a costume designer. She was very good at what she did, but that didn't stop her from feeling inadequate in the looks department.

I really appreciate the few of you who shared that you didn’t think Sally’s reaction to Noah liking her would have changed much even if she was a star too. She really had some deep seated insecurities! I didn’t take the time to consider this when I commented earlier. Now you’ve got me thinking!
Her low self esteem was surprising because it seemed like she had a loving, supportive family, she was encouraged by the producer of OWLs who eventually hired her, and she had awesome, amazing friends! Sally was really, really damaged by her relationship with her husband. She may have been the type of star who was caught acting out, going to rehab, and wreaking her own havoc because of the competing I am star vs. I am unworthy.

Well, that would have been an entirely different novel! One of the main aspects of this story was the fact that Sally was a writer with a particular point of view, who expressed herself through words, not performances in front of a camera. And as such, Sally did not ever expect to find herself being scrutinized and followed by the media, nor did she intend to date a celebrity. She married a man who was not part of the entertainment industry, and believed as she tried numerous times to get a job with TNO, that she would remain married to him.
Moreover, if she were a performer/entertainer, the scrutiny about her appearance would have been old news and she would have had to be immune (externally, at least) to it in order to be successful. She might still have been insecure and vulnerable internally, but as noted elsewhere, she would probably have been pursued by many men who just wanted to be with her because she was famous. And how that would have impacted her psyche prior to meeting Noah . . . we'll never know!
