What are some of the challenges you saw Sally face as a comedy writer in a male-dominated industry? If you’ve worked outside the home, have you run across similar challenges in your own career?

Just some of the skits that she tried to write were being critiqued by men and sometimes they didn't understand the humor. Also, her list of acceptable terms vs unacceptable, really stuck with me. There is so much misogyny in our society when it comes to this.
I worked in a female dominated profession, dental hygiene, but also most dentists are male, I did not personally ever feel challenges because of this, but I know that some males in the dental hygiene profession are not taken seriously by their peers or bosses. Very definite gender roles are still in place there!

It really is about male dominated career choices versus women dominated choices. Think nurses, teachers, secretaries. It was unusual to find males occupying those roles. Today it is not ann unusual choices for men to be in those roles. Whether the job is pro female or pro male, the opposite sex will find challenges in those positions. Sally’s comedy writing absolutely encapsulates a male dominated career.

To succeed in a predominantly male profession, Sally learned to "work the room." At times, she had to be "one of the guys" to being a female perspective into the conversation. Yup, I've experienced it, especially the last 14 years of my career as an attorney in a law enforcement agency working mostly with male peace officers, many of whom were quite misogynistic, conservative, and resented some of the changes to the organization and society as a whole. Like Sally, I had to temper the message I was delivering in order to be heard. I found my way, as did she and as do most women in American workplaces. Still. We shouldn't have to do that. We still have a very long way to go to achieve true equality and be respected fully for our intellects and talent.
