Jason is the old flame Lil never let go of, in part because her life has been brought to a standstill. Though he is real to her, the only Jason who appears in the book is his memory. Where do you think the real Jason is in the present? How is his haunting weaponized against Lil?

I guess I assume that the real Jason is dead, or else he would have come back to deal with the family house. Lil is vulnerable regarding Jason, because she never really got over him and hoped that he would come back..so the memory was a manifestation of her wish.

Jason left town and is now an older man. Hopefully he stopped loving Lil years ago and has had a successful life with a loving wife and children. As a younger man it was hard for him when Lil chose the orchard over a life with him. He was Lil’s only love so it was easy for her to believe that he has come back.

I have no idea where the real Jason is or if he ever existed. This was puzzling to me.

One of the things that wasn't explained was what happened to the people who did, in fact, leave. Surely some of the children left while their parents stayed behind; did any of those children ever come back, other than Autumn and Sasha?

I imagine the real Jason left to live his life. Whether he was able to come back or not, I don't know.

I think once Jason left after high school he stayed gone - never returning. Theon portrayed Jason to get to Lil.

I think when Jason got a taste of life beyond the pecan groves, he made a new life. I agree with KimK one of the most frustrating things about this book was never knowing what happened to the people who did leave? What happened to the families that split, some staying, some leaving?
