Autumn’s friend Matt refers to the “Homecoming Effect,” the pressures a person might feel to conform, blend in, or become an earlier version of themselves when they visit home. RE: How does the Homecoming Effect ...

I think it's very common for people returning home to revert to earlier roles. This was especially true for Sasha, since her sister encouraged her to remain in the role she adopted in the city.

I have a very close friend who's a high-powered executive for a large company. I often spend time with her and her parents, and every single time she's around her mom she reverts to her teenage self. It's really funny to watch. I think I do the same thing around my parents as well.

And it can cause conflict if you don't resume those roles. My mom gets super frustrated with me when I don't act the obedient child.

I don't think they really had a say in how they reacted once back home. Remember they are caught in a time loop - doing the same things over and over and over again.

Many people resort to a younger age when confronted with a parent or a hometown.
