The authors use creative writing, poetry, and photography throughout The 1619 Project. Why do you suppose they chose to include these different styles? How did their inclusion impact your reading of the book?

I think the different styles of writing and photography added an additional emotional layer that would have been absent without it. I think they were a great addition. While I am not a poetry person, the poetry in this book was very touching. And I love old photographs.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book was not all straight text. I've had the book for a while and couldn't get in the mindset to read a text book this large. However, I am thankful to BookBrowse for including this book for discussion which motivated me to go ahead and read it so I could participate. I have attended a session with Ms Jones discussing the book. I agree with the above posters that including the short fiction, poetry, and photography added to the understanding of the overall subject matter and made it more palpable.
