There is so much to unpack in this material. By offering different "voices," the tone and temperament of each section fluctuates and keeps the readers' attention. The poetry is poignant and the photography informative.

I think the different styles of writing and photography added an additional emotional layer that would have been absent without it. I think they were a great addition. While I am not a poetry person, the poetry in this book was very touching. And I love old photographs.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book was not all straight text. I've had the book for a while and couldn't get in the mindset to read a text book this large. However, I am thankful to BookBrowse for including this book for discussion which motivated me to go ahead and read it so I could participate. I have attended a session with Ms Jones discussing the book. I agree with the above posters that including the short fiction, poetry, and photography added to the understanding of the overall subject matter and made it more palpable.

Adding creative writing, poetry and photography added nuance, more perspective and depth to the information presented in each chapter. In some cases, it added another person’s lived experience and enhanced what was presented in the corresponding chapter.
