I'm actually on Cape Cod as I respond to these questions, and I've spend a great deal of time here. I love this corner of the world. I do think the setting contributes to the story in many ways - Joy's beautiful house on the water echoes the light and openness of the coast and perhaps gives all three women some space for healing. The characters were influenced by their long connections to the Cape and to Massachusetts. Dante, the firefighter and one of Boston's finest, in particular seemed so much a part of New England, but for all of the characters, so many aspects of the area - from the medical facilities, to walking on the beaches, to knowing all the local residents, to noticing and painting the light - were integral parts of their stories. Yes, the story could happen anywhere, but Ms. HIggins gave it texture and specificity by setting it in a real and beautiful place.
