Peggy hired Lee because she was the best defense attorney, not because she had been married to a bisexual or had best friends who were gay. When Lee decided to take the case, she didn't even think about how it would affect her relationships with Mark and Bobby, who might not be too happy she was defending a young man who had confessed to taking part in the murder of a gay man. In fact, one Saturday at dinner, Lee even called the two men out on their reaction to her taking the case. "Where the hell have you been for the past fifteen years? And, now that I think about it, where was your horror when the victims were women and children?" I got the impression that Lee was too much of a professional and incredibly aware of what her oath required of her to be affected by those around her.
While the murder of Sam was absolutely horrifying, I found myself reacting more harshly toward Jeremy's parents. A very close friend of mine had a terrible experience with her church after her son came out. I guess I'm not as surprised that a bunch of skinheads are capable of murder as I am about two parents who call themselves Christians and then turn against their only child at a time he needs them the most- -the love thy neighbor thing- -God didn't say your straight neighbor.
