What audience would you recommend this novel for? Are there other books that you’ve read that you felt were similar, either in themes or writing style?

I would recommend this book for a book club (I just sent a note to my book club!) It is well written and there is so much to discuss, the different cultures approach to medical treatment, women's role and society. So rich for various viewpoints...which is what a book club needs, in my opinion.

I would recommend the book for all adults who are historical fiction readers especially because the book covers a different topic and era of women's history many readers are not familiar with. Also, a great book for book clubs because there is so much to discuss.

I agree this is a book that would appeal to book clubs keen on reading about diverse cultural experiences and historical figures.
Her hidden genius , the dark lady, the history of art without men, hidden figures-
All favorites of mine discussing women erased from history
I encourage both women and men in their twenties and thirties to read this book, as well.

I agree with others, this is a great book for book clubs. I saw this as historical fiction, and therefore relates to Kristen Hannah, Marie Benedict and so many others. Extra points for giving us something other than WWII viewpoints. Since so much was based on women, I think it might be read by more women then men, but it is interesting to all. Also, anyone interested in learning more about China would value this book.

I agree with all who say this is a good book club read and discussion. I like that historical fiction makes us think about times other than our own. I often find myself researching more about stories that are historically based. I agree that Kristen Hannah, Marie Benedict are wonderful authors in this genre. I also was slightly reminded of the book The Good Earth and her difficult struggle with her life.

I think this book would have wide appeal to anyone interested in history. This is what good historical fiction looks like. I had long known about foot binding, but I had no idea how deep and painful the impacts of this brutal activity on Chinese women were. Women died, often …. From infections and falls.
I also think this would be a great woman’s studies book.

A similar title that immediately came to mind is Physician / Noah Gordon, an excellent book about an 11th century young man who was determined to learn the practice of medicine and succeeded in doing so even though it meant danger.
Any reader interested in past Asian culture, women’s studies, ancient medical practice and historic fiction should find Lady Tan’s Circle of Women a great choice.

I think anyone who is interested in broadening knowledge of ancient cultures and the role women have played would enjoy this book. Our book club read Lisa See's book Island of Sea Women and were fascinated about the role women played and strength of friendship. This book is similar in many ways so I think my book club would enjoy reading it as well.
