Was Diane a sympathetic character? What similarities do you see between Diane and Tate?

Diane was a sad character, but hard to find sympathetic. Everyone was hurt by her, including herself. I have found that usually these type of people have had role models in their past that exhibited these same traits and characteristics to get by and this behavior is considered necessary for survival. When confronted with the real world, they are frustrated by not understanding how people they admire and love don't love them back. They think they are doing everything right. Then they try and trap them which produces all kinds of other problems. Better if these types just stick with the same types. They might implode, but at least they won't break the hearts of others who mistakenly trust them with their hearts.

I did not find Diane to be a sympathetic character at all. She was narcissistic and manipulative. She wanted what she wanted, would do anything she thought would help her get it, and didn't care who got hurt in the process. Tate, although narcissistic as well, I thought, was less manipulative and seemed to care about others. Sometimes people got hurt, but I don't think it was intentional, unlike Diane who deliberately set out to hurt others as she pursued and manipulated her way toward her goals.

No, she was not. She came across as a bitter woman who used whatever she could to get what she wanted. I do not know what was in her past to make her this way, perhaps she did not have enough confidence in her own abilities to feel she had other choices. Tate picked up on her behavior. I believe if Tate had been raised by different parents, she have turned out differently

I found Diane to be a very unsympathetic and brittle character. She felt that Jack was her perfect match, even though he gave ample evidence that he didn't love her. I do wonder who Tate's biological father was.

I thought Diane was somewhat sympathetic bc while she was often a terrible and manipulative character, she had moments where you could see why she was the way she was- for instance, her love for jack overpowered her, and she was not able to deal with only tenuous grasp she had over him. He was all consuming to her, while she was a mild presence in his life; she went off the rails more than a few times to keep him in her life.

I was not a big fan of Diane. I think she and Tate both felt entitled to whatever they wanted because they were celebrities. Diane walked all over anyone that got in her way, as did Tate. They were both very insecure and needed to be in control .

Diane was not a sympathetic character and evidently not a good actress, but hanging on Jack's coat tails. This probably affected the way she raised Tate, that turned her into the woman she too became. How much of this did the author pick up from her reading about Hollywood of the 50s?
