What did you think of Liz’s idea to create an “Obituary of a Murdered Village” (p.170)?

The idea of creating an obituary was a clever one. Liz felt she was unjustly demoted to the obits department. This particular obit would hopefully get her the attention she deserved as a journalist while featuring an historical event that affected the lives of the displaced residents from Tydeham. In fact, Liz was one of those residents although quite young at the time.

Well said, Elizabeth Marie! I couldn't agree more with your thoughtful reflection. I, like the other readers, loved it. I also thought it was an interesting juxtaposition between the reaction of the editor of the Obits Department as compared with that of the News Room editor. One saw it as belligerent and off-script for what an obituary should be where the other saw the human interest in it and the power of the analogy for the paper's readers.

I agree with Elizabeth Marvel's assessment that it was "a unique way to focus on the lives and losses suffered by an entire village during wartime. It recorded the history of the ordinary civilians who experience sacrifice during times of war, not just those who serve in the military." It was beautifully written.
AND it was a wonderful way to subtly but defiantly let the editors of the newspaper see that Liz is a gifted writer who will never again be relegated to an assignment that doesn't permit her to utilize all of her skills. She stood up for herself in a most digified, yet commanding way. Bravo to her.

I liked the idea. I imagine most people had forgotten about the town and what happened to it, if they even knew about it. There were people who lived there, people whose lives where greatly impacted by the government's actions. Her obituary told their story while showcasing her own writing skills. She technically had not stepped out of her job description since it was technically an obituary, but it showed a sensitivity and talent that she normally wouldn't have been able to display.
