I love it! It’s a new twist on the work that she has been forced into. The town really did die and it’s only fitting that someone wrote something to commemorate the fact that it happened.

I thought it was a good idea and reflected on her time writing obits.

Liz gave her detested obituary assignment a clever twist. Helped her prove she could write more than obituaries.

It was a brilliant way to do her job and also to showcase her journalistic capabilities, as well.

I think the obituary was intended to commemorate more than the death of the village. It also commemorates the loss suffered by Liz and Jenny, and their biological families as a consequence of the upheaval on the home front as a consequence of the war.

The idea of creating an obituary was a clever one. Liz felt she was unjustly demoted to the obits department. This particular obit would hopefully get her the attention she deserved as a journalist while featuring an historical event that affected the lives of the displaced residents from Tydeham. In fact, Liz was one of those residents although quite young at the time.

I really resonated to the idea, not only for historical importance, but also as a chance for her to show her creative thinking and skill. Given her lack of interest in doing obits, I applaud her thinking outside the box

I thought her Obit story was a good idea. She could show her talent for research and contribute to history.

I always wondered how newspaper reporter's get their ideas for their stories, especially the human interest ones. The titles are important to draw the reader in to read the rest of the articles.

What an innovative idea, and one that would most likely give her the opportunity to move out of the Obit drudgery.

I liked it! The events may seem small but are really significant. Kudos to Liz the journalist for her sensitivity.

I thought it was important that she wrote this"obituary" to commemorate the many families who had been affected by their displacement.

I thought the obit was a unique way to focus on the lives and losses suffered by an entire village during wartime. It recorded the history of the ordinary civilians who experience sacrifice during times of war, not just those who serve in the military.

Well said, Elizabeth Marie! I couldn't agree more with your thoughtful reflection. I, like the other readers, loved it. I also thought it was an interesting juxtaposition between the reaction of the editor of the Obits Department as compared with that of the News Room editor. One saw it as belligerent and off-script for what an obituary should be where the other saw the human interest in it and the power of the analogy for the paper's readers.

I agree with others in that it was a very creative way to honor the town and people, and reiterate why the town was chosen. Also a nice way to show how obituaries can not only inform but also comfort readers.

I agree with Elizabeth Marvel's assessment that it was "a unique way to focus on the lives and losses suffered by an entire village during wartime. It recorded the history of the ordinary civilians who experience sacrifice during times of war, not just those who serve in the military." It was beautifully written.

AND it was a wonderful way to subtly but defiantly let the editors of the newspaper see that Liz is a gifted writer who will never again be relegated to an assignment that doesn't permit her to utilize all of her skills. She stood up for herself in a most digified, yet commanding way. Bravo to her.

RE: What did you think of Liz’s ...

I liked the idea. I imagine most people had forgotten about the town and what happened to it, if they even knew about it. There were people who lived there, people whose lives where greatly impacted by the government's actions. Her obituary told their story while showcasing her own writing skills. She technically had not stepped out of her job description since it was technically an obituary, but it showed a sensitivity and talent that she normally wouldn't have been able to display.
