I have read this wonderful book and was relieved to know I was not the only one who is on the constant search for the next thing to eat. I wholeheartedly believe in the carbohydrate addict's problem. But I am a little confused as to how "nutritionists" and "educated" individual's views and Dr. Atkin's views can clash so much. Biology teachers have always taught students that ketosis is bad for you because ketones are toxic to the body. I would also like some evidence as to why this high fat intake can improve high blood pressure. Don't get me wrong, I have lost quite a few pounds on this diet and enjoy a guiltless and hunger-free lifestyle, but I would appreciate the reasoning behind it all.

This book/diet is simply amazing. I have a good friend who was loosing weight rapidly and looked great. She sang the praises of The Atkins Diet. I bought the book, and was surprised how easy it is. I am under the impression that any diet, given exact use, will be successful, but I usually give up because they are too hard to stick with. This diet isn't. After 3 weeks I've lost 18 lbs. Starting at 271 and 5'5" that's a good start. My energy is up, I don't miss my afternoon sleepy lul at work, and my kids already see a new me. I don't even crave carbos anymore after the first 10 days or so. BUY the book, READ it, and LOOSE the weight. What have you got to loose that you don't already wish you had. Good Luck!

I read this book early last year. Went on the diet and lost 55 pounds in 6 months, I wanted to lose 100. After some surgery and a major depression lasting almost a year, where I gained all the weight but 5 lbs back, I re-read the book, and restarted the diet. I agree with most people here that I feel much better on the diet. In the week since I have been back on it, I already dropped 12 pounds. The book is easy to read, logically organized, and contains useful recipes and a carbohydrate counter table. I recommend the diet, and therefore the book, to anyone looking to lose some weight.

We are doing the OWL phase of the diet now after losing 9-11 lbs. each on the 14-day Induction phase! (Starting stats: Husband 40 yr., 6'3" 211 and Wife 31 yr., 5'8" 175.) As we went those first few days, we said aloud over our d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s fried eggs and sausage, "this is insane!" We were wonderfully delighted to see the weight melting away. We, too, feel better overall...though there was the occasional bout of fatigue and muscle cramp...take your vitamins with calcium...don't allow yourself to get hungry on the Induction...keep eating! Wife feels like her youth is being restored. To GOD BE THE GLORY for Dr. Atkins as this remarkable answer to prayer!

I started the Atkin's diet 4 days ago and am in "ketosis". I have also lowered my fat intake and am taking Xenical. In the past 3 weeks I have lost 12 lbs., I hope to lose 70. I started out weighing 220, I am 5'5". I have IBS, heart palpitations, prurigo, and arthritis. I hope this diet helps me in more than one way! I am really wanting to eat a few donuts, but am able to do without so far. Especially because the Xenical punishes] you if you take in too much fat. I am having a hard time drinking a lot of water. My hands swell up really big. I am wondering if I can take water pills also?

I have yo-yo dieted since my teens. I am now in my mid 30's and the weight wouldn't come off even taking step aerobics. When a co-worker told me about Dr. Atkins diet, I was skeptical, but I figured, what have I got to lose? Other than weight that is. I convinced my husband to go on it with me and we have both lost 19lbs in 6 weeks. This is with out exercising. I can just imagine how much we could have lost if we had been exercising also. Before the diet, my husband and I lived on Tums. We haven't had heartburn once since being on the diet. I also had symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, not anymore. I was raised on bread, potatoes and desserts, and I thought it would be extremely tough to go without, but amazingly it hasn't been.

When my mom went on this diet about a year ago, I was very skeptical. However, after totally losing control, I thought I would give it a try because I saw that this was working for her and a lot of people. My mom has kept her weight off for over a year. (her first time every keeping it off). I began this diet on May 16, 1999. So far Ii have lost seven pounds in just one week. I have more energy than I have had in the past year. Thanks Dr. Atkins!

Great book, I am in the health care field and work with elite athletes (sports medicine). I've lost thirty-five pounds in five weeks. I have also recommended it to our patients. I sleep better and have more energy. I've had a history of heart palpitations. After I started Dr Atkin's food plans, no more palpitations. This book is a must for all.

It was October I weighed 175lbs. and was 5ft. tall. I was planning a wedding for March and had tried every nonfat , lowfat , slim fast diet in the book and continued to gain. My friend said it had worked for her mother so, I read the book. Simply amazing!!! I started in October and when March 22nd rolled around I weighed 109 lbs. I looked fabulous!!!! I just had a baby and began the diet again for bathing suit season!! I highly recommend this easy to read ,easy to follow book. Thank you Dr. Atkins

My husband and I were on this diet back in the 70's when it first came out. He lost over 50 pounds and I lost over 25. We both felt and looked the best we ever have. I have gone back on it many times over the years when the weight has crept back on. Since October 26, 1998, I have lost 22 pounds and now my husband is back on it to. This time we will make it a life-style change. We are both in our 50's and would like to be healthier and more fit forever. We both believe in this diet and highly recommend it to others.

I have practiced this diet for the last 14 years, it has enabled me to be in control of my life with regard to weight loss, more energy, a feeling of well being, and an improvement in some vital signs such as blood pressure, cholesterol etc;. However I cannot convince my wife who is about 15 Kgs overweight to practice this diet, her sister also is overweight and has openly criticized my practice of a low carbohydrate diet, last week my sister in-law suffered two mild heart attacks, both sisters are now reading the book.

His arguments against our ever-increasing use of sugar and refined starches in our diet are logical and compelling. Best of all, in the time it takes to read this book, you can prove it to yourself that his plan works by simply trying the diet for the 14 day "induction period." Give it a read and give the plan a try. Free yourself from junk calorie dieting for life!

Devine Secret's of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood is an awesome book. Being a Louisianian I thoroughly enjoyed the book that takes place in Central Louisiana. It is a must read especially for long time friends. It will truly give you all the thrills of looking back on your life with awe and knowing that true friendships are great for the soul. And in the grand finally of it all, sometimes it is best to wonder and not try to understand.

This is one of the best books I have ever read on defining friendships. I have a close knit group of friends- there are 4 of us- and after we read the book we started calling ourselves The Yaya's. Even other people have started refering to us as The Yaya's. This is how much this book effected our lives. We all can relate to each character (we even have matching bracelets with our Yaya names on them) and find bits of ourselves in all of them. We are taking a trip together (our 2nd annual Yaya Getaway) and we will be starting off our trip by listening to this book on cassette. We are anxiously waiting for Ms. Wells next book. She is an amazing talent with a unique insight into the souls, hearts and minds of women.

I have to agree with others in that Little Altars Everywhere plays an enormous part to the Devine Secrets. Both books were compelling and moving as well as delightfully comical. Little Altars Everywhere gives a background on The Devine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood that is detailed and you see how The Devine Secrets is indeed about Sidda but more in the eyes of the Ya Yas. You learn to love each character...and hate them as well. Although I probably enjoyed The Devine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood a trace more then Little Altars Everywhere, one can not be read without the other.

i am rather torn. i liked the summary for divine secrets- sort of. it's not all about sidda. it's about 4 best pal's growing. not up, just growing. you never mentioned "little altars everywhere", the book before yaya. "little altars" sheds so much light upon vivi, & everyone else.'spring creek" has become my fave spot to go to, in my head, when i can't sleep. i hope ms. wells writes more about the yayas. once one reads "divine secrets" one never sees the world the same. it is yaya, or yaya no!

Although we have read many books over the past eight years, "Creeker" (1999) proved itself to be one of our favorites. I have read it twice myself and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a poignant, funny, and wise account of DeRosier’s coming of age in the rural south, her traveling the world as a woman and academic (Psychology professor), and never losing touch with the place from whence she came. At times we laughed until our sides ached, reminisced about our own escapades and favorite memories, and the value of where we’ve been over the years. Other times, we rediscovered lost moments from adolescence: the first kiss, the first love, and the first heartache. And, we explored family, career, being a woman, and personal choices and consequences. DeRosier is a born storyteller and a cultural historian for a time and place that seems to be fading away. In short, "Creeker" is an autobiographical narrative told by a woman who seems to have figured out how to balance a complicated life without losing those aspects that are fundamentally necessary to be who she is. Her personal account is uniquely hers, yet again and again it resonated in some way for those of us in the group. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Elaine M (NY, NY)
